Neutrino effective area tables for IceCube-Gen2 This package contains tabulated neutrino effective areas for the detector described in the Technical Design Report for the IceCube-Gen2 Neutrino Observatory. The effective areas are stored in a JSON file gen2_tdr_effective_areas.json. The top-level object contains metadata relating to how the table was made, while effective areas are stored in the data object. Each element of this array is an object representing the effective area of a particular event selection (channel) and detector (detector). The attributes of this object are: detector: the detector used (IceCube, Gen2-Optical, Gen2-Radio) channel: event signature for optical detection (shadowed_tracks, unshadowed_tracks, cascades, starting_tracks, double_cascades) energy: 1-D array of bin edges in neutrino energy at the surface of the Earth, in GeV cos_zenith: 1-D array of bin edges in cosine of zenith angle of the neutrino arrival direction. At the South Pole, cos(zenith) =~ -sin(declination). area: 3-D array of effective areas in m^2. The dimensions are: neutrino type (anti-electron neutrino, electron neutrino, anti-muon neutrino, muon neutrino, anti-tau neutrino, tau neutrino), neutrino energy (in bins given by energy), direction (in bins given by cos_zenith), For IceCube-Gen2, the detector/channel combinations are: Gen2-Optical / shadowed_tracks: through- and downgoing tracks detected in the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array whose trajectory passes through the footprint of the IceCube-Gen2 Surface Array. Such events have a reduced background from penetrating atmospheric muons. Gen2-Optical / unshadowed_tracks: throughgoing tracks detected in the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array whose trajectory does not pass through the footprint of the IceCube-Gen2 Surface Array. This includes down-going events with significant background from penetrating atmospheric muons as well as up-going events with only atmospheric neutrino background. Gen2-Optical / cascades: events starting in the instrumented volume of the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array and classified as cascades. Gen2-Optical / starting_tracks: events starting in the instrumented volume of the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array and classified as starting tracks. Gen2-Optical / double_cascades: events starting in the instrumented volume of the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array and classified as double cascades. Gen2-Radio / radio_events: events detected by the IceCube-Gen2 Radio Array. Effective areas calculated in the same framework are provided for the existing 86-string IceCube detector for comparison: IceCube / shadowed_tracks: through- and downgoing tracks detected in IceCube whose trajectory passes through the footprint of IceTop. IceCube / shadowed_tracks: through- and downgoing tracks detected in IceCube whose trajectory does not pass through the footprint of IceTop. IceCube / cascades: events starting in the instrumented volume of the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array and classified as cascades. IceCube / starting_tracks: events starting in the instrumented volume of the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array and classified as starting tracks. IceCube / double_cascades: events starting in the instrumented volume of the IceCube-Gen2 Optical Array and classified as double cascades.
