This study evaluated the microbial communities across reactor bed depth in 4 pilot-scale biologically active aerated contactors and 1 second-stage biofilter that treated groundwater containing ammonia, iron, manganese, and/or arsenic. The goals were to (1) evaluate contaminant removal, (2) assess changes in community composition with depth, and (3) compare profiles in aerated contactors to downflow filters. This study is particularly relevant to drinking water engineers.
