Changes in extracellular matrix act as a priming stimulus on endothelial cells to increase secondary inflammatory responses on sites of disturbed flow. Fibronectin has been described as an enhancer of endothelial responses to cytokines. We tested the capacity of other pro-inflammatory stimuli to be able to mediate a similar priming effect. However, cytokines proved to diminish secondary pro-inflammatory responses.
