Figure 1 is the NOAA 2 satellite VHRR photo for about 15002, January 12, 1973. It shows two long streaks of lake-snow flurry activity extending southeast from Lakes Erie and Ontario. Two important points are to be noted: 1. The effect of the lakes extend many miles downstream, in this case to the Hudson Valley. 2. The area in the lee of the lakes is not entirely affected by snow flurries, but only two narrow bands with a lot of clear skies elsewhere. Note particularly the clear area over the Finger Lakes.
