Water samples were collected in four Kenyan rivers (Sare, Asao, Rangwe, and Rangwena) in two seasons to characterise bacterial communities. Bacterial 16S rRNA genes were amplified utilising the V3-V4 primer pair (341F: CCTAYGGGRBGCASCAG; 806R: GGACTACNNGGGTATCTAAT) in accordance with Yu et al. (2005) and sequenced using a 250-bp paired-end Illumina platform. PCR amplification and amplicon sequencing was conducted by Novogene Co. (Cambridge, UK).
