The rougheye rockfish Sebastes aleutianus is a member of a marine fishes species flock with an estimated 102 species native to the west coast of North America. Rockfishes of the genus Sebastes support important commercial and recreational fisheries on the west coast of North America and are the dominant assemblage on most cold temperate reefs. Their slow growth rates render them vulnerable to overfishing. The rougheye rockfish has extremely long lifespan (205 years old individual fish recorded) and do not show signs of aging (negligible senescence), while closely related S. minor has a maximum age of only 11 years.
