Estimates of the maximum rate of microbial community respiration (MCR) were collected via the electron transport system method (Packard and Williams, 1981). Filters were size-fractioned to differentiate between rates of respiration for differing microbial communities. Discrete interfacial seawater samples were taken from below floes 8 and 9. These samples were taken by scientists from the University of East Anglia in February 2024 during the NERC-funded PICCOLO cruise SD035 in the Southern Ocean.
