U.S. federal rail transportation spending 1995-2022

U.S. federal railroad expenditure increased significantly in 2020. Spending on rail grew from around or below 20 billion per year prior to 2020 to over 32 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, growing further to 37 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that was passed in 2021 allocated large amounts of public funding to transport infrastructure, resulting in this most recent growth in spending.
