VPRS 3477 Correspondence Files (Agriculture Division)

This series comprises the subject correspondence files of the Agriculture Division of the Department of Agriculture. It is not certain when the Agriculture Division was first established.The Agriculture Division appears to have been responsible for such areas as field crops, disease control, irrigation, plant breeding, weed control, fodder conservation and pastures. The responsibilities of the Division were subject to Departmental reorganisations. In 1924 the Orchard Supervisors Branch of the Agriculture Division combined with the Fruit Inspection Branch of the Produce Division to form the Horticulture Division see VPRS 10293 Horticulture Division Correspondence Files. In 1966 the Pasture Branch of the Agriculture Division transferred to the newly formed Animal Industry Division.In 1976 a major reorganisation of the Department was undertaken. The Divisional structure was replaced by a Group structure. The Agriculture Division and the Horticulture Division were amalgamated to form the Plant Services Group.Subsequent SeriesThe correspondence files of the Plant Services Group have been registered as VPRS 8642. These files are a subsequent series to this series as is VPRS 10293.Related SeriesFrom 1911 the Department of Agriculture operated a Central Administration Registry. It is evident that this series may include duplicate material to that found in VPRS 10163 Central Administration Correspondence Files (1911 to 1965) and VPRS 8089 Central Administration Annual Single Number Correspondence (1965 to 1976).
