The Southern Cross University's medicinal plant herbarium collection was started in 1996 and consists of an ethnobotanical focus on medicinal plants, mostly those used in Western phytotherapy or Traditional Chinese Medicine. Many specimens have been chemically profiled by HPLC. The collection includes crude botanical drugs and serves as reference collection of authentic medicinal plants. A significant portion of the collection was donated by the late Dr Calder Chaffey which includes Austalian ferns and eucalypts. There are also specimens of non-medicinal species from Eastern Australia.
The collection consists of more then 6000 specimens.
