Florida Municipal Shelter Response Data Natural Disaster Response Preparedness

Disaster preparedness continues to be a significant and increasing challenge for the welfare of companion animals and their carers. Results of an online, anonymous survey to identify the role and level of emergency natural disaster response planning at Florida municipal animal shelters for companion animals are reported. Overall, 13/64 agencies within the state responded, most were aware of the PETS Act of 2006 and alongside other municipal departments, providing emergency and disaster planning involving companion animals. A relationship between the categorical variable population census, facility square footage, staff , canine, feline and volunteer capacities, and disaster planning preparedness was observed.Findings suggest that improved knowledge of local, state, and federal agencies responsible for responding to natural disasters. and greater coordination among all stakeholders may improve disaster planning and ensure the timely care of at-risk companion animals. Further around understanding populations of companion animals and caretakers and detailed evaluations of municipal and non-municipal animal sheltering organizations’ capacity to respond are recommended to enable effective disaster planning.
