Caribbean Protection Statistics - TNC

This table contains area calculations and statistics related to marine and terrestrial protection in the Caribbean. These statistics have been calculated using TNC's Protected Areas layer, which has been compiled from multiple sources including the WDPA, local governments, NGOs, and partners. These statistics were last updated on August 12, 2024 and will be updated periodically by TNC to incorporate new protection, latest habitat data layers, and adjust inaccuracies. This table is used to track progress towards the Caribbean Challenge Initiative goals as well as the global 30x30 goals. Existing protection is tracked for each country's ocean, land space, nearshore environment, mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass, and hardbottom habitat, as well as proposed protection for land and ocean. All area calculations are in square kilometers. These are "Area (geodesic)" calculations using a custom Lambert Azimuthal Equal Area projection centered on the Caribbean. Country: Country or territory name Country_Idnum: ID number assigned alphabetically Num_PAs: Number of protected areas per country. This is calculated based on the shapefile, so it may count expansions as additional protected areas. This number may be subject to revision NumMPAs: Number of marine protected areas. Same limitations as Num_PAs above NumTerrPAs: Number of terrestrial protected areas.
