A Corpus-Based Discourse Analysis of the Genetic Modification (GM) Controversy in Food and Agriculture

The use of genetic modification (GM) technologies in food and agriculture is the subject of considerable controversy. This thesis investigates the discourse on GM policies in Australia (2016–2019) through analysis of submissions to six government reviews. Using a purpose built corpus, the research explores linguistic patterns, genre, argumentation strategies, and themes like food values, sustainability, and science. Public stakeholders showed greater negativity and the use of unconventional opposites, while agribusiness and science stakeholders emphasised persuasive strategies. The findings highlight differences in discourse and suggest corpus-based approaches to enhance transparency and reduce bias in public policy decision-making processes.
