**Overview**
- IMO’s COVID19 Signs and Symptoms NLP model extracts COVID-19 related signs and symptoms defined by WHO, as well as eight associated attributes (body location, severity, temporal expression, subject, condition, uncertainty, negation, and course) from clinical text. The extracted information is also mapped to standard concepts in the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model.
- If there is need for FHIR outputs, the pipeline and model can support it.
- The model uses a hybrid approach of combining deep learning-based models, curated lexicons and pattern-based rules applied to quickly build, maintain, and expand using the proven industry NLP development tool (CLAMP), now owned by IMO. The workflow can be repurposed for other use cases, where existing clinical natural language processing tools need to be customized for specific information within a short time.
- At the time of original publication in June 2020 there were 16 healthcare organizations using and expanding upon the model.
- The main model was trained from three institutions and social media dataset of medical dialogues but has evolved since original release.

**Use Cases**
- Scrubbing through large unstructured, structured, clinical, claims, patient reports, etc. datasets take time and effort. This NLP model extracts signs, symptoms, and their attributes, and has measurable success using precision, recall, and F-measurements by exact match between manual and automatic annotation.
- The model can output tab-delaminated files of normalized clinical concepts, with a format ready for importing into the Note_NLP table of OMOP CDM as well as structured and codified data into the related structured fields of OMOP's CDM.
