Pre-Omicron variants caused more severe disease than Omicron BA.1.1 in geriatric mice, but later Omicron subvariants partially regained pathogenicity. Compared with young adult mice infected with the same variants (B.1, Beta, Delta, and Omicron BA.1.1), geriatric mice exhibited reduced lung lesion severity but increased viral antigen burden and brain pathology, particularly in mice infected with the Beta variant.
