Lactobacillus animalis NP51 is a direct-fed microbial strain (DFM) used as a pre-harvest food safety intervention in feedlot cattle due to its antagonistic effects against human foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli O157:H7. Its genome was sequenced to speciate the strain and to identify unique genetic targets to be used in the development of subsequent molecular assays.
