Satellite displays from scanning radiometers sensitive to infrared radiation are now available to the Air Weather Service forecasters. These products are received in the form of Direct Readout Infrared (DRIR) transmissions from the ITOS-1 and NOAA-1 satellites and as digitized infrared products on the FOFAX network. Real-time infrared displays became routinely available only in late 1970, thus, in-depth studies of infrared applications to analysis and forecasting have just begun.
