Length of railway lines in use in Germany 1990-2021

From 1990 to 1995, the German railway network in use rose to its peak, with a total length of 41,700 kilometers in 1995. In the following years, this value declined, reaching the lowest of 33,500 kilometers as of 2012. From 2013 onwards, the railway network length fluctuated. By 2021, useable rail network in Germany rose to roughly 39,800 kilometers.
