资源简介:
This paper provides descriptive evidenceof the gender gap in parental work duringholidays, leveraging a novel linkage betweenphysicians’ parenthood status and theirdaily medical claims. Holidays vary in thedemands they create for parents’ time be-cause they potentially affect both demandfor labor in the workplace and the avail-ability of childcare outside the home (e.g.,in school). We find that minor holidays —when schools close but workplaces are oftenopen — exacerbate an existing gender gapin physician work. However, on major holi-days when physicians’ offices are less likelyto be open, the gender gap closes. Our re-sults add to evidence that mismatches be-tween workplace expectations and mothers’demand for flexibility contribute to the gen-der gap in work.
