Feeding the world beyond 2050: Leveraging Africa’s pig sector for sustainable food security

The pig sector in Africa, particularly its indigenous breeds, represents a crucial yet underutilized resource for food security and poverty alleviation among rural households. This study reviews the current status of Africa's pig sector, highlighting its contribution to rural livelihoods and food security through a comprehensive analysis of production systems and socio-economic impacts. Our study demonstrates that Africa’s pig sector, despite their current limitations, holds significant potential for enhancing food security across Africa. Through detailed analysis of regional production and consumption patterns, we show how this sector provides sustainable protein sources while requiring minimal input, making them particularly valuable for resource-limited households.
