In this study, our hypothesis was that rare rhizosphere taxa contributed to multiple functions and trade-offs in larger proportion than the abundant taxa did. To test this hypothesis, we characterized the rhizosphere abundant and rare bacteria and fungi, rhizosphere C, N, P cycling functions, multifunctionality, aboveground primary productivity and trade-offs, explored how the abundant and rare bacteria and fungi drive the multiple rhizosphere functions, aboveground primary productivity and trade-offs, compared their relative contributions in subtropical sole and intercropping systems in China.
