A system of Shî’ah Law, entitled معارج الدین و مناهج الیقین, by MUHADHDHAB AL-DÎN AḤMAD B. ‘ABD AL-RIḌA, who compiled it for the use of his son, Muḥammad Ilyaâs, and completed it in A.H. 1079, at Mashhad.

The rhymed preface begins: احمدک اللهم یا خالقی ، و اشکرک اللهم یا رازقی. The author complains in it of hard times, the decay of learning, etc. His work contains fifty-nine books, which are enumerated on fol. 3, as follows: کتاب الطهارة فالصلوة فالزکوة فالخمس فالصوم فالاعتکاف فالحجّ فالجهاد فالامر بالمعروف و النهی عن المنکر، فالتجارة فالدین فالرهن فالحجر و المفلّس فالضمان فالحوالة فالکفالة فالصلح فالشرکة فالمضاربة فالمزارعة و المساقاة فالودیعة فالعاریة فالاجارة فالوکالة فالوقف فالصدقة فالهبة فالسُّکنی و الحبس فالسبق و الرمایة فالوصایا فالخاتمة، فالنکاح فالطلاق فالخلع فالمباراة، فالظهار فالایلاء فاللعان فالکفّارات فالعتق فالتدبیر فالکتابة فالایستلاد فالیمین فالنذر فالعهد فالاقرار فالجعالة، فالصید و الذباحة فالاطعمة و الاشربة فالشفعة فالغصب فاللقطة فاحیاء الموات فالفرائض فالقضاء فالشهادات فالحدود فالقصاص فالدیات.

These books are arranged under the four heads usual with the Shî’ites, العبادات, العقود, الایقاعات, and الاحکام. There precedes (foll. 3-43) a long introduction, مقدّمة فی وجوب العلم و العمل به و فضله الخ, which contains four alleged conversations (مجلس) of Mufaḍḍal b. ‘Omar1 with the Imâm Ja’far Ṣâdiḳ, and the work concludes with an admonition (وصیّة) of the author to his son, which also comprises the testamentary advice of the Prophet to ‘Alî, that of the latter to his three sons, that of Plato to Aristotle, etc. (foll. 586-605).

The author dates his copy in the following manner: اتفق الفراغ من مشقّة مَشْقِه ساعة جواهر لا اله الّا الله، من یوم محمد رسول الله صلعم، من شهر امیر المؤمنین ولیّ الله، من سنة حَمَلَةِ العَرش عباد الله، من حُبِّهم أُمنآءِ الله، بعد مُضیّ الحَاصل من ضرب تالی (ثلثی .r) نصف الميقات من الهجائیة، فی عجزها من الهجرة النبویة، علی مهاجرها افضل الصلوة و اکمل التحیة، فی المشهد المقدّس الرضوی شُرِّف بمشرّفه علیه صلوات الازلی، علی ید مؤلّفه المعترف بذنبه، التائب الی ربّه المشتهر بمهذب احمد بن عبدالرضا، عوملا بالفضل و الرضا آمین.

The numerical value of حملة العرش is 1079, and the product of computation following, if I do not err, 107,900 (!).

There follow (foll. 605v.-608), with the title هذه صُوَرُ خطوطِ بعض الفضلاء المعاصرین علی الکتاب الموسوم بمعارج الخ, six testimonials of learned contemporaries, approving of the present work, which, at the request of the author, were written by them successively in his copy, viz. of Muḥammad al-Ḥurr, Abu’l Ḳâsim Riḍawî (his note in Persian), Ḥasan b. Muḥammad Zamân Riḍawî, and Muḥammad Fâḍil, all dated A.H. 1079, and of Bahâ al-dîn Muḥammad Ardistânî, and Muḥammad Ṣâdiḳ, both dated A.H. 1086.

In two volumes, the first concluding (fol. 301) with الخاتمة, or the end of Part II. Well written in two hands. Dated 29th Dhû-alḥijjah, 1087. Ornamented and gilt.
