Energy efficiency is a critical concern in power-limited wireless sensor networks. As receiving of packets is proven to consume the most energy in a wireless sensor node, wake-up technologies are gaining more importance. They enable asynchronous communication with low latency while maintaining a low power consumption. This contribution's focus is the investigation of wake-up receivers based on off-the-shelf components and low-frequency pattern matchers, such as AS3933. Furthermore multiple improvements, especially with regard to low-frequency domain, to enhance the wake-up receiver performance and reliability are proposed to the state of the art.
