This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of mineralogy and environment on community structure of attached and planktonic bacterial communities. The inoculants were obtained from Lower Kane Cave in Wyoming (USA). Samples were collected from biofilms attached to various mineral surface types (carbonates, silicates, aluminosilicates, planktonic) after 3-weeks within 4 geochemically distinct (carbon, phosphate, pH) CDC flow-through biofilm reactors. Bacterial communities were assessed from amplicon pyrosequence libraries of single-direction reads generated using multiplexed, bar-coded primers targeting the V1-V3 region of the 16S rRNA gene.
