We present a mouse virtual reality (VR) system which restrains head-movements to horizontal rotations, potentially compatible with multi-photon imaging. This system allows expression of the spatial navigation and neuronal firing patterns characteristic of real open arenas. This dataset contains electrophysiology recordings of hippocampal cells while animals were navigating in virtual environments. Each recording session consisted of one 40 min random-foraging trial in a virtual reality (VR) square environment and one 20 min trial in a real environment. Spike sorting was performed offline using an automated clustering algorithm (KlustaKwick) followed by a manual review and editing step using an interactive graphical tool (WAVEFORM by D. Manson, http://d1manson.github.io/waveform/). Spatial cells including place cells and grid cells have been identified in the dataset.
