On the Trail of Frames: A Systematic Map of Research on Frames in Conflicts over Energy Infrastructure and Related Fields

The energy transition is accompanied by complex and intractable conflicts over infrastructure and the use of land and other resources. Frame analysis can help to understand the underlying issues and dynamics. This article reviews 87 peer-reviewed studies on frames in the context of energy transition conflicts. It facilitates future research by providing a comprehensive overview of the applied theories, methods, and research designs in the form of a systematic map. The findings reveal a lack of consensus on the definition of frames and a predominance of qualitative case studies. Critical knowledge gaps are identified, highlighting the need for an expanded methodological repertoire and greater integration of broader social theories. Addressing these gaps may lead to deeper insights into the emergence, transformation, and impact of conflict frames. In this way, future research can have a positive impact on the fairness and speed of the energy transition.
