Aye-aye mitogenome eDNA sampling

We developed a method of environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling in the aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis). The aim of this study was to determine whether aye-aye mitogenomes could be obtained from aye-aye feeding traces by using a target capture and enrichment method of sampling. The aye-aye is listed as Endangered and considered one of the world's top 25 threatened primate species, yet its cryptic nature makes it difficult to sample in the wild. We developed this technique to facilitate genetic sampling in this species for application in population monitoring.
