Images from an Archaeological Evaluation at 17 Walnut Tree Road, Pirton, Hertfordshire 2018

This collection comprises images from an Archaeological Evaluation on land at 17 Walnut Tree Road, Pirton, Hertfordshire. The investigation, which consisted of trial trenching, was undertaken by the Heritage Network in October 2018, in order to advise the local planning authority regarding the archaeological potential of a proposed development on the site.
Ten trenches of varying dimensions were excavated. The trenches exposed a topsoil and subsoil over the natural slightly silty clay substrate.
The fieldwork revealed six features considered to be of possible archaeological significance. Four pits and two ditches, all were dated by pottery finds to the 9-12th centuries, except for one of the ditches which had no finds, however prehistoric pottery was found nearby and may be associated.
On the basis of the evaluation results, the risk that the proposed development might have a negative impact on remains of archaeological significance may be considered to be High for early medieval and Low for all other periods.
