High quality genome assembly and annotation of Thecaphora frezzii, cause of peanut smut disease

This project provides a chromosome-level assembly and annotation of Thecaphora frezzii, the cause of peanut smut disease, a major disease of peanuts in Argentina. A high quality reference will be important to monitor pathogen population dynamics and evolution as more resistant host material is introduced. The annotated genome will contribute to the greater understanding of an understudied clade of the Ustilaginomycetes or the true smut fungi, a taxon that includes important plant pathogenic fungi as well as opportunistic human pathogens and industrially useful yeasts.
