斯隆数字巡天,英文“Sloan Digital Sky Survey”,简称SDSS。这里的斯隆指的是阿尔佛雷德斯隆(Alfred P. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) takes its name from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the primary sponsor of this astronomical survey program. SDSS is an ambitious large-scale sky survey. It will perform deep census observations over one-quarter of the celestial sphere, measuring positions and brightnesses for over 100 million celestial objects, and distances for more than one million galaxies and quasars. For comparison, the Hipparcos Catalogue contains fewer than 120,000 celestial objects, while the Tycho Catalogue includes just over one million entries. Through observations of a vast number of galaxies, quasars, stars and other celestial bodies, SDSS will produce the most accurate cosmic structure map to date, investigate the spatial distribution of galaxies across the universe, characterize the fundamental properties of the cosmos, and seek out the most distant celestial objects known. SDSS endeavors to advance human understanding of several fundamental questions regarding the universe. Concerning the origin and evolution of the universe, scientists have put forward a diverse array of hypotheses and theories. SDSS’s observational data may help determine which of these theories are valid, which are not, and whether entirely new cosmological theories are required. This dataset primarily comprises catalog data, with approximately 1.2 billion recorded entries.
