VPRS 12725 Register of General Correspondence, Electrical Engineering Branch

The Department of Railways was organised into various branches, each with its own separate registry and record-keeping systems dealing with its own activities and administration. The Branches registered correspondence received from the public, other government departments, other railway branches including the Secretary's Branch. Secretary's Branch correspondence referred to other branches for action was registered in both the Secretary's Branch system (VPRS 422) and the relevant Branch system.Entries were made under the headings:- Branch Progressive Number (sequential number)- Other Number (Secretary's Branch Correspondence Registration Number,- Date of Letter,- Date of Registration,- From Whom,- Subject content and- How Dealt with.This series provides a summary of the activities of this branch. Letter registers were a means whereby correspondence received was summarised and its movement through the organisation was tracked and action taken with respect to it noted until it was finally attached to a file.
