Overthepastfewyears,Europehasfacedunprecedentedchallenges,notablywiththeCOVIDpandemicandRussia’sinvasionofUkraine.Thisyear,2023,directlyfollowsthisdifficultperiodcharacterisedbytheeconomicdownturn,highenergypricesandincreasingcompetitionontheglobalstage.Wehopethat2023willfirstandforemostbringpeacetoEurope.Atthesametime,theenergycrisisandsupplychainissueshavelaidbaretheneedtostrengthenEurope’sindustrialresiliencetoundertakeanambitioustransformationtowardsthe2050EUGreenDealgoals.OurEuropeanchemicalsindustrysupportstheEUGreenDealandhastheambitiontogoclimateneutralby2050.Thismeans,weneedtochangehowweproduceandwhatweproduceinlessthan30years.AndweneedtodothiswhileremaininggloballycompetitivesothatwecouldcontinuesupplyingtoimportantEUvaluechains,includingcleantech.Indeed,wearefacingthebiggesttransformationinthehistoryofoursector,aswegoclimateneutral,circular,anddigitalatthesametimeastransitioningtosafeandsustainablechemicals.Alltheseactionsrequirebillionsofadditionalinvestmentsbetweennowand2050.WeneedcertaintythatEuropeisanattractiveplaceforourindustrytoinvest.ThisiswhytheimplementationofthededicatedTransitionPathwayforoursector,publishedbytheEuropeanCommissioninJanuary2023,isvitaltokeepnotonlyourindustryinEurope,butalsoallothervaluechainsdependingonchemicals.Chemicalsareeverywhere,andarepresentinmorethan90%ofmanufacturedgoods.Theyareindispensablefordisinfectants,medicaldevicesandsmartsensorstomonitorhealth,forexample.Solutionsdevelopedbythechemicalindustryextendthelifespanofwindturbines,turnwasteintosustainablefibrefornewclothes,andmakeelectricvehiclebatteriesmorepowerfulandefficient.ThisiswhyhavingastrongandthrivingEUchemicalindustrywillremainkeytoachievingtheobjectivesoftheEuropeanGreenDealandourstrategicautonomy.
