Marine demarcations

The cartography included in this service contains the delimitation of the Marine Demarcations corresponding to the Marine Strategies of Spain. Marine demarcations are understood as the subdivisions of the marine regions and subregions that constitute the spatial scope on which each marine strategy will be developed, and there are five: North Atlantic Marine Demarcation, South Atlantic Marine Demarcation, Strait and Alboran Marine Demarcation, Levantine-Balearic Marine Demarcation and Canary Islands Marine Demarcation (Article 6.2 of Law 41/2010, of 29 December, on the protection of the marine environment). Marine demarcations are used as national marine units for notification to the European Commission in accordance with Directive 2008/56/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing a framework for Community action in the field of marine environmental policy.
