Sequencing an experimentally evolved strain of Sodalis glossinidius

Sodalis glossinidius is a recently-evolved secondary endosymbiont of the tsetse fly. The genome of S. glossinidius reflects its recent transition to a symbiotic lifestyle: it consists of 50% pseudogenes and is the same size as the genome of a free-living bacterium. Here we present the sequence of a strain of S. glossinidius that has been passaged in in vitro culture for two years, SgGMMC1*. The sequence was generated by assembling Illumina MiSeq reads de novo and polishing the assembly with long Nanopore MinION reads, using Unicycler. The genome was annotated using PROKKA using S. glossinidius strain GMMB4 as a reference.
