The Gulf killifish, Fundulus grandis, is a euryhaline species that is found primarily along the US Gulf of Mexico coast with distribution spanning to the Atlantic coast of Florida. It is an important environmental model for the Gulf of Mexico because of its proximity to significant petrochemical and other industrial activities, high tolerance to salinity gradients, importance in estuarine food webs, as well as the recently identified adaptation of multiple populations to highly polluted environments. The high site fidelity and adaptability of F. grandis make it a relevant environmental aquatic model and a promising genetic tool for ecologically relevant research within the Gulf of Mexico region.
