The strain was isolated in 2002 from root bark of Melia azedarach (Meliaceae) as an endophyte. The root bark was separated mechanically from the xylem and washed with water followed by ethanol and then sterilized with 11% aqueous sodium hypochlorite for 1 min. Penicillium brasilianum LaBioMMi 136 was isolated by replication and grew as a bluish colored culture. The strain presents interesting genetic potential to produce bioactive secondary metabolites. Genome sequencing of Penicillium brasilianum LaBioMMi 136 revealed interesting features about its secondary metabolism including the observation of 42 putative biosynthetic gene clusters. Genetic and Enzymatic studies were able to correlate brasiliamides to plant-specific phenylpropanoid pathway.
