Synechococcus elongatus PCC 6301 This freshwater organism is the type strain for the Cyanobacteria originally described as Anacystis nidulans. The genes controlling circadian rythms have been studied and numerous knockout strains are available. The genome of this strain and its close relative Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 are being evaluated for further understanding of the circadian clock mechanism.
