Sleep deprivation significantly alters cell distribution and gene expression in the brainstem, cortex, and hypothalamus, particularly downregulating genes related to metabolism and synaptic transmission. Through cell communication analysis, we did find a decrease in communication between astrocytes and neurons, which is consistent with the results of [1H-13C] - nuclear magnetic resonance detection of metabolic kinetics, indicating that glutamate/GABA-glutamine metabolism is impaired in these cells
