The is an extraction of the SWAG36 CROCO simulation around La Reunion island for the period 2010 2015.
The SWAG (South West indiAn subtropical Gyre) series consists of a set of high-resolution oceanic simulations based on the CROCO model, designed to investigate the regional dynamics in the southwestern Indian Ocean over the 1993-2018 period. It particularly focuses on the interactions between the Mozambique Channel and the Agulhas Current, a region where the mechanisms of energy transfer between mesoscale eddies and the mean flow remain poorly understood.
The SWAG simulations use the GLORYS ocean reanalysis at 1/12° resolution (daily frequency) to constrain the open boundaries of the domain, and the ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis (hourly frequency) to force a bulk surface parameterization. Daily discharges from the 56 major rivers in the region are taken from the GLOFAS v3.1 product. Early versions, SWAG4 and SWAG12, were tested at low resolution. The SWAG36 configuration, with a horizontal resolution of 2.7 km, comprises a 2560 × 1680 × 75 grid. The SWAG configurations were evaluated against observations for their representation of the mean oceanic structure and eddy activity.
