As of June 2024, around 553 million people in China used online food delivery services, accounting for around 50 percent of the Chinese internet user base. Today, the majority of online food orders in China are placed using a mobile phone. The boom of online food delivery in ChinaChinese people love to eat out. The majority of Chinese consumers spent a decent amount of money while eating in restaurants. However, food delivery is gaining popularity, especially for lunch. The convenience of apps, online payment methods, as well as the fast pace of urban life were the main reasons behind the trend. Local cuisine, fast food, bubble tea, and other tea-based drinks were the most commonly ordered type of food for delivery. Food delivery services after the COVID-19 pandemicThe online food delivery industry suffered from a temporary setback during the COVID-19 outbreak in China. However, the demand bounced back immediately after social distancing measures were lifted. A 2023 survey found that about 82 percent of respondents used food delivery services at least once a week. On average, app users spent between 25 and 100 yuan per order on online food delivery.
