This dataset contains concentration and distribution data of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in major rivers of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Hengduan Mountains region. Samples were collected in 2020 and 2021, covering four major rivers: the Yarlung Tsangpo River, Nujiang River, Lancang River, and Jinsha River, with a total of 81 sampling sites. Water samples were prepared via pre-treatment steps including solid-phase extraction, purification and concentration, then analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The target compounds include 15 EPA priority-controlled PAHs excluding naphthalene (NAP), specifically: acenaphthylene (Acel), acenaphthene (Ace), fluorene (Flu), phenanthrene (Phe), anthracene (Ant), fluoranthene (Fla), pyrene (Pyr), benzo(a)anthracene (BaA), chrysene (Chr), benzo(b)fluoranthene (Bbf), benzo(k)fluoranthene (Bkf), benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene (IcdP), dibenzo(a,h)anthracene (DahA), and benzo(ghi)perylene (BghiP). Isotope-labeled recovery surrogates were added during the sample pre-treatment process. The calculated sample recoveries ranged from 76% to 107%, with method detection limits (MDLs) of 5.0–193.9 pg/L. In-situ measurements of river water quality parameters were conducted using a YSI ProPlus portable multi-parameter water quality meter, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, electrical conductivity and salinity, with respective precisions of 0.1℃ for temperature, 0.01 mg/L for dissolved oxygen, 0.01 for pH, 0.1 μS/cm for electrical conductivity, and 0.01 ppt for salinity. This dataset can provide scientific basis for spatial distribution mapping of organic pollution at large scale on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and water quality safety assessment of the Asian Water Tower.
