This data set corresponds to the data supporting the publication titled "Salt-free cationic and anionic chitin polyelectrolyte hydrogels for electrochemical applications", which addresses the synthesis of three chitin derivatives and the formation of gels from these chitin derivatives. The ionic conductivity, viscosity and cyclic voltametry of the polymers and gels are also described. A brief description of the preparation method for these compounds is provided below. A more detailed description is available in the associated full article. The three polymers are obtained from chitin as follows: Chitin is dissolved in an aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide and urea. This solution is mixed with either glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride (for chitin trimethylammonium) or with allylglycidyl ether (for chitin allyl). After reaction, the solution is neutralized, centrifuged and purified by ultrafiltration. The chitin sulfonate is obtained by reaction of the chitin allyl with sodium bisulfite in water, then purified by ultrafiltration. The purified polymers are freeze-dried and were characterized by IR and NMR in D2O. Gels from these polymers are obtained by cross-link with 1,4-butanediol-diglycidylether in potassium hydroxide solution. They are dried 48h before FTIR and NMR analysis.
