We have developed a biologically-inspired approach to the design of next-generation photonic materials, in which programmable pigment-polymer complexes (PPACs) are produced via conjugation of various amine-functionalized dyes to an aldehyde-functionalized PAGEO5MA brush. Dye conjugation to a brush scaffold provides an effective means of minimizing dye-dye interactions and hence extending the excited state lifetime.
