We have identified, sequenced and characterised the first bacteriophage capable of penetrating and killing capsulated pneumococcal cells. This paves the way for novel therapeutic applications and we have demonstrated that our phage can successfully clear invasive pneumococcal infections (pneumonia and sepsis) in mouse models.
