Development of a Next Generation Base Isolation System for Seismic Hazard Mitigation of Buildings

Participated in a research project that involved developing a self-centering base isolation system that uses a novel semi-active banded rotary friction device with a self-centering mechanism to mitigate structural damage due to earthquakes and allow for normal building operations to resume without delay. The positive results are reason to move onto experimental validation through real-time hybrid simulation with the physical banded rotary friction device and numerical models of the self-centering mechanism and a practical MDOF structure. This would be beneficial to structural design in earthquake engineering.
