The motion of solvated protons (H+) in in water is fundamental to the concept of acidity, but remains an active area of research. We wish to investigate zeolites as a solid acid catalyst for the conversion of methane to methanol with water. To understand this partial oxidation reaction with water, we must first understand the interaction of pure water with the protons in the zeolite. This proposal aims to investigate the hydrogen motions within water when adsorbed on three activated zeolites and three potential Cu-zeolite catalysts derived from these materials.
