Objectives: 1. Estimate fishing effort, landings and catch-per-unit-of-effort (CPUE) of adult river herring (alewife and blueback herring) and American shad in Virginia in spring 1996. 2. Determine the present status ofthe stocks relative to former years by comparison of landings and CPUE. 3. Estimate current biological statistics (age and size frequencies, and species composition) ofriver herring and American shad. 4. Assess total mortality from CPUE data (this objective will be addressed in a forthcoming completion report summarizing 1993-1996 data). Project: AFC - 26 Final Report, 1996 Grant no. NA66FA0245
