Australian regulation of surrogacy and the needs of surrogates, intended parents and those born through surrogacy

This research explored whether the regulation of surrogacy in Australia meets the needs of surrogates, intended parents and those born through surrogacy. The available evidence on surrogacy experiences was systematically reviewed, 319 intended parents were surveyed, and 15 stakeholders were interviewed. The findings suggest that surrogates and intended parents experience legal, social, and financial challenges and many babies born through surrogacy have been exposed to practices which may negatively impact their future health and wellbeing. These findings suggest that an overhaul of the existing regulatory and social environment is required and provides potential strategies to achieve so.
