Interactions between top-down attention and bottom-up visceral inputs are assumed to produce conscious perceptions of interoceptive states, and while each process has been independently associated with aberrant interoceptive symptomatology in psychiatric disorders, the neural substrates of this interface are unknown. We conducted a preregistered functional neuroimaging study of 46 individuals with anxiety, depression, and/or eating disorders (ADE) and 46 propensity-matched healthy comparisons (HC), comparing their neural activity across two interoceptive tasks differentially recruiting top-down or bottom-up processing within the same scan session. ## Description of the data and file structure
This dataset accompanies the following publication: Adamic et al. (2024) ([https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.92820.2)](https://doi.org/10.7554/eLife.92820.2). Here we examined interoceptive neural processing using two different functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) probes: bottom-up manipulation of cardiorespiratory signals, and top-down attention towards cardiac and respiratory sensations.
