Deep anoxic groundwater samples were obtained for anoxic enrichment cultures. The enrichments were cultured in five different enrichment media varying in nutrient composition and availability of organic carbon sources under sulfate reducing conditions. The bacterial communities were characterized by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequenciing and qPCR of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and dsrB gene and the metabolite profiles of the enrichment cultures were characterized after an incubation period.
